Rent Space in Muckabout's Pottery Kiln

We offer limited space in our small kiln for potters who need to fire their work. Each firing is limited to 1 cubic foot of clay work.

Please note: We do not accept rental firings during the month of December.

Kiln Space & Volume

Each firing allows for up to 1 cubic foot of work.

As a simple size reference, a standard milk crate is approximately 1 cubic foot. You can use a milk crate to estimate how much work you can bring for a firing.

To determine whether your pieces fit within the 1-cubic-foot limit, you may carefully stack your work inside a milk crate. This can help you estimate how many pieces you can bring.

Important: Pieces must be arranged so that they do not touch one another. There must be sufficient space between pieces to allow for safe firing. This applies to both bisque ware and glazed pieces.

Please remember that the 1-cubic-foot measurement refers to the overall space occupied by your work, not simply the amount of clay used to make the pieces.

Minimum Firing Charge

The cost of each firing is based on the amount of kiln space used, with a minimum charge equal to the cost of 1 cubic foot of kiln space, even if you bring less than 1 cubic foot of work.

If your pieces require additional space because they are unusually large, tall, or require special placement, they may not fit within the 1-cubic-foot limit and may require additional kiln space or a separate firing.

Scheduling & Drop-Off

Please call Muckabout's Pottery to schedule an available date for dropping off your pieces.

Once your appointment is booked, you may drop off your work at any time during our regular business hours on your scheduled date.

Our storage space is limited, so please do not drop off your work before or after your scheduled date.

Firing Timeline

Please allow at least one week for your firing to be completed.

Firing times are not guaranteed, as our kilns prioritize student work. Larger, taller, or specialty pieces may require additional time depending on available kiln space and firing requirements.

Pick-Up & Payment

Fired pieces must be picked up during our regular business hours.

Payment is due at the time of pick-up.

Kiln Firing Requirements

Bisque Firing – Cone 06

  • All pieces must be completely bone-dry before drop-off.
  • Pieces should not exceed 1/2 inch in thickness to help prevent steam explosions and kiln damage.

Glaze Firing – Cone 6

  • The bottom of each piece must be completely free of glaze.
  • Hanging pieces, such as beads or ornaments, cannot be accommodated.
  • Stilts and personal kiln furniture are not permitted.
  • Please prepare your pieces carefully to ensure that glaze does not run onto the kiln shelf.
  • All clay and glazes must be rated for mid-range or Cone 6 firing.

Your Responsibility

Muckabout's Pottery is not responsible for damage to or loss of pieces during the firing process.

The owner of each piece is responsible for any kiln or shelf damage caused by defects, improper preparation, or materials used in their work.

Glaze that runs onto the kiln shelf, including glaze on the bottom of a piece, can cause significant damage to kiln shelves. Any resulting damage will be subject to a repair fee.

Damage charges, including glaze drips onto kiln shelves, start at $20.

Please inspect and properly prepare your work before drop-off to help prevent damage to your pieces, the kiln, or kiln shelves.

Unclaimed Pieces

Pieces must be picked up within 14 days of being ready.

Any items left unclaimed after 14 days will become the property of Muckabout's Pottery and may be disposed of or otherwise handled at the studio's discretion.
